At the moment, there are some oddly cheap fares on Delta and Air France from Edmonton to Antananarivo, Madagascar for $984 CAD roundtrip including taxes.
Typically, even the very best roundtrip prices to Madagascar are over $2,500 roundtrip.
However, it's quite a lengthy journey!

Note that January to March is Madagascar's wet season. You may want to focus on the April and May dates.
"The best time to visit Madagascar is generally outside of the January to March wet season. The island's climate varies greatly though; the central highlands are colder and wetter in March to October - but this is a perfect time to visit the southwest.
April still finds a few storms but on the whole this is the start of Madagascar’s dry season with plenty of lush green foliage making April or May the best time to visit, especially for surfers."

2. Many of the flights in the $900s CAD roundtrip involve overnight layovers in Vancouver or Paris (or both).
On Kayak, if you look on the left hand side under 'Durations' and slide the 'Layover' slider down to anywhere below 6 or 7 hours, you'll see flights for $1024 CAD roundtrip that only involve 2 to 4 hour layovers.
This still makes for 29 hours of total travel time each way, which, believe it or not, is actually about as fast as Edmonton to Madagascar can be done. Madagascar is a lonnnng ways way! It's a 17,000 km journey *each way*.
