It's been a long time since I've seen flights from Edmonton to Taiwan drop into the $700s, roundtrip, including taxes.
It was 2011 when they last dropped to this level, which prompted me to take an unexpected trip to Taiwan. Knowing very little about Taiwan, I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised.
There was a lot more natural beauty than I had imagined. The Taroko Gorge was one of my favorite areas...
There's also some pretty nice beaches, especially in the south.
Baishawan beach
I remember the people being incredibly friendly, often walking up to offer assistance any time I looked remotely lost.
Everything was super efficient, especially the subway in Taipei.
Most of the time, I felt like the only Westerner in Taiwan. It seemed to be a bit of an undiscovered gem, not yet on the typical SE Asia tourist track.
