2-in-1 Trip: Edmonton to Singapore and Japan - $704 CAD roundtrip including taxes

Singapore and Japan

Now that Japan is finally re-opening on October 11th (no more mandatory guided tours, daily caps, or visa requirements) many of us have been wondering when there will be a great deal to Japan again.

Prior to the pandemic there would occasionally be some amazing price drops from Edmonton to Japan with roundtrip flights temporarily available in the high $400s to low $600s CAD roundtrip including taxes.

The last time that happened was actually two years ago, *during* the pandemic.

After that, prices to Japan kept creeping upwards and never looked back. Today they sit at approximately $1300 CAD roundtrip for the cheapest flights.

When Australia opened back up, the astronomical flight prices from North America came back down to earth. Yes the demand was higher, but there was also more supply (more flights).

Will the same thing happen with Japan? My gut would say yes, eventually. The same market forces that were leading to great deals to Japan between 2016 and 2019 should eventually return. It's just tough to predict when that will be. But is there anything we can do in the meantime?

As you may have seen recently the first strong deal to emerge from Edmonton to Asia was to Singapore. At $659 CAD roundtrip the price for YEG-SIN is pretty close to the great deals witnessed between 2018 and 2019.

Those prices are still around and using some Multi-City magic it's possible to turn them into a great "2-in-1 deal" where you can visit both Singapore *and* Japan for just $50 more.

UPDATE: There are currently some dates in the low $800s for late August and September 2023 travel. Recently there have been reports that these flights have not been bookable (see comment section below).

Availability for travel

late April, May, June 2023

late August, September 2023 ($804)

How to find and book this deal

Step 1

Go to Kayak or Skyscanner or the ANA website.

Step 2 - Search for a Multi-City flight like this one:

Leg #1: Edmonton (YEG) to Singapore (SIN)
Leg #2: Singapore (SIN) to Tokyo (TYO)
Leg #3: Tokyo (TYO) to Edmonton (YEG)

Step 3 - For Leg #1 and Leg #3, try the following start and end dates for your trip.

Aug 29 to Sep 11, 12, 17, 18
Aug 30, 31 to Sep 11, 12, 17, 18

Sep 5 to Sep 17, 18

--- previously available dates ---

Apr 25 to May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25

May 9 to May 18, 24, 25, 29, 31, Jun 1
May 10 to May 18, 24, 25, 29, 31, Jun 1

May 11 to May 24, 25, 26, 29, 31, Jun 1, 2, 5, 6
May 14 to May 24, 25, 29, 31, Jun 1, 5, 6
May 15 to May 24, 25, 29, 31, Jun 1, 5, 6
May 16 to May 25, 29, 31, Jun 1, 5, 6, 7, 8

May 17 to May 25, 29, 31, Jun 1, 5, 6, 7, 8
May 18 to May 26, 29, 31, Jun 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12
May 21 to May 29, 31, Jun 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12
May 22 to May 31, Jun 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13
May 23 to May 31, Jun 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13

May 24 to Jun 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15
May 25 to Jun 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19
May 28 to Jun 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 21
May 29 to Jun 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 21

May 30 to Jun 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 21, 26, 28
May 31 to Jun 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 21, 26, 28

Jun 6 to Jun 13, 14, 15, 19, 21, 26, 28
Jun 8 to Jun 30

Step 4 - For Leg #2 (the middle leg) try using a date that is 3 days after the date in Leg #1.

For example, if your start and end dates from above are May 16 to May 29, you could try searching for...

May 16 to May 19 to May 29.

This gives you a few days in Singapore and the rest in Japan.

If you try to reduce the number of days in Singapore to less than a few days, the flight price goes up.

You can however increase the number of days in Singapore without affecting the price.

NOTE: Most of these flights fly into Tokyo's NRT airport, and then home from Tokyo's HND airport. It's not an issue since you're spending time in Japan, but just be aware.

Is there any way to skip the Singapore part of the trip?

I love Singapore, don't get me wrong, but the extra 14 hours of flights, 6 hours of layover, the to-and-from the airport/accommodation, and all the related logistical stress feels like it might not be worth the extremely short time there.

We were thinking of just getting off at the Tokyo layover, but that would apparently cancel our return flight, is that correct?

It boggles my mind that this is somehow cheaper than a one-way in either direction from Tokyo <-> Edmonton.

Hi Breads - Unfortunately most dates sold out sometime by the first week of October. Although there are still a few that are showing up for $734 CAD roundtrip. I just updated the blog post for you with some dates that appear to still be working.

Yes, it is definitely true that airlines will usually cancel the remainder of a ticket once a leg is intentionally skipped. This article attempts to explain why they do that.

Just to note that there's a *minimum* time you need to spend in Singapore to get the lower flight price. But not necessarily a maximum. For example May 11 to May 14 to May 26 works, but so does May 11 to May 18 to May 26.

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for your response and this additional post! I'm now trying to book a flight, but no matter which site I go through (FlightHub, TravelUp, JustFly) it says "The fares for one or more flights are no longer available." and I can't check-out. It then brings me right back to the search page, and the flights are still there.

What does this mean/what should I be doing?

Interesting, I haven't seen anyone report that issue. I added a link to the Multi-City page on the ANA website in Step 1. Maybe try searching there and see if that works for your dates. I just tried May 11 to May 16 to May 26 on there and was able to get to the payment page without any issues. The 'Next' button on the ANA website is at the very bottom and kind of difficult to notice.

The error message appears after the payment page. it thinks for a bit, and then I get the message and it backs out. A $0.00 pre-auth is sent to my card, so SOMETHING is happening. I tried another card as well to check if that was the issue, but still no luck.

I tried May 11 to May 14 to May 27. No issues until the very last step of booking. I'll keep trying!

And just to verify, that was on the ANA website?

Correct. Could not get through on ANA's website directly, Flighthub, TravelUp, nor JustFly.

Price unfortunately has gone up since then by $100/ticket, as well.

Breads. I’m also having that problem. Did you figure out a solution?

Sorry, Speedbump151, unfortunately I did not. Not sure whether to try again at the increased price (which is still not a bad deal), or wait for it to hopefully get lower again.

Hey Breads, just letting you know I was able to book something on Destiny Holidays. I got a booking confirmation that is pending my credit card verification so hopefully it goes through. the price is $1708 for our 2 adult tickets.
    Good luck!

I’m also having this issue :( on all the sites the fares are there, but as soon as you put in credit card info and hit book, It tells you the fares are no longer available… through flighthub, travelup, justfly, even the ANA website… so dumb! Was so excited for this.. :’(

I called ANA yesterday and was on the phone for over two hours total (including hold times), and they said it was something like the flight is "full" and it's there for some weird waitlist purpose or something. They said there was no way to get that price at this time :/

Just to mention that there are currently dates in late August and September 2023 for $804 roundtrip. But it's tough to know if these will have the same issue when attempting to book.
